The Local History Resource Centre was established in 1987 by Wigo H. Skråmm and Nils Steinar Våge. At that time were both employed at Østersund Middle School in Fet. The main purpose was to use local historical sources in the teaching of social studies on the grade and jr. high school levels. Starting with an archive of local historical material that we had built up over many years we started developing educational assignments for grade school and adapting the archives for use in elective courses in local history in the local jr. high school.

Later, when we began including more widely used sources, such as parish books and censuses on computer more and more users approached, these included high school, genealogists, the 'bygde' book author in Fet, the municipal department of culture, the library, university students, and others.

The need for computers became evident when we saw the possibilities for use in the teaching of history. With cross-departmental support we bought equipment for the project.
