The Viking Network

The Viking Network is a project which aims to answer the following question: How do we combine the teaching of the Vikings and the Viking era with electronic communications?

How it all began

By the summer of 1993, Wigo Skråmm in Norway and David Morley in Scotland had been involved in electronic mail links between their two Regions for about a year. Both wanted to integrate the use of electronic communication into the curriculum, and particularly into History. They started to think about the Vikings. David had some ideas for doing a simulated raid, while Wigo came up with the idea of Viking Information sheets. It was these sheets which then became the core of the Viking Network. In his article Wigo tells how the idea came to him and gives his thoughts on the Viking Network.

What is the Viking Network all about?

The Viking Network is all about using electronic media in History. It started as an electronic mail project, but has expanded to, an electronic mailing list and, the Viking Network World Wide Web pages.

Joining the Viking Network

You don't have to join the Viking Network to use these World Wide Web Pages. We want them to be freely available to all. If you want to get further involved in Viking projects and other Viking Network activities here's how you join.

The Viking Network on the World Wide Web

We wanted to involve more people in the Viking Network, than just the Network members so we decided to set up these pages (and ,of course, after you see what is going on you might want to join). We want the Viking Network pages to be the first stop for people in schools wanting to find out about the Vikings, and we will be setting up links to other Viking sites on the Internet and to relevant organisations. Of course we also wanted to have fun dabbling with the new technology, and hope you find it just as much fun to use.

Viking Network People

We thought you might like to know about the people involved in the Viking Network, and even what we look like!! A growing number of people send contributions to the Viking Network Web. Take a look at the credit-list.
