The Vikings in Wales

There were numerous Viking raids on the coast of Wales from the mid-8th to late-1st centuries, almost always from Ireland and with the objective of plundering religious houses. St. David's was sacked at least seven times in this period. A number of Viking place-names along the coast show that there was some Scandinavian settlement, though this was probably no more than the establishment of some coastal 'camps' or minor trading stations. There was very little impact on the culture, language or genetic stock of Wales.
