The election of Prince Charles of Denmark to the vacant Norwegian throne was anticipated so generally that its accomplishment will cause no surprise. From the moment that King Oscar of Sweden refused to assent to the request of the Norwegians that a member of the house of Bernadotte should be permitted to ascend the throne of Norway all eyes turned towards Prince Charles. The King of Sweden would be more than human did he not regret the sundering of the Scandinavian Union, and the erection of Norway into an independent state. But throughout a crisis which contained elements of distinct danger His Majesty has kept his head, and to his tact and self-effacement in a great measure is to be attributed Norway's great happy issue out of her afflictions. In all certainty there is no Prince King Oscar sooner would see in possession of a portion of his inheritance than the sailor son of the King of Denmark. The Danes and the Scandinavians are allied closely by ties of blood and by a community of interests. The king of Norway may be trusted to do all that lies within his power to promote friendly feelings between his new subjects and those of the neighbouring kingdom of Sweden. Norway's choice we should say will meet with universal approval. At one bound and by pacific methods she (N) has elevated herself into an independent state, and she has secured for herself as a sovereign one who is related by blood at least to two of the foremost Powers of the day. Such connections must stand Norway in good stead now that she has started keeping house for herself.

The future of Norway henceforth will claim the attention of the Briton, for he will recall that the Consort of Prince Charles is a daughter of Edward VII. The royal pair are fitted in every way for the duties of high station to which they have been called by the overwhelming voice of the Norwegian race, and it will be the prayer of all that the future which awaits them will be rich in promise, comfort and happiness.
