With great solemnity the Storthing yesterday at six o’clock unanimously elected Prince Charles of Denmark King of Norway.
All the member rose when the President loudly cried: "God save the King! God save our dear fatherland!"
At the same moment the election was proclaimed to the people from the fortress by the firing of a salute of forty-two guns.
The Storthing’s resolution was immediately telegraphed to King Christian and Prince Charles. The Prince’s answer came at nine o’clock, and reads as follows: --
"With the permission of his Jajesty the King, my august grandfather, I accept the name Haakon VII. And give my son the name of Olaf. My wife and I invoke God’s blessings on the Norwegian people. We will dedicate all our future life to the honour and happiness of the Norwegian people."
With deep emotion the members of the Storthing then shouted: "God save the King."
The news of the election was telegraphed to all parts of Norway, and was everywhere received with great joy.
