LONDON AND KING HAAKON

The Norwegian colony in London - some 400 or 500 strong - gave a dinner last night at the Criterion Restaurant in celebration of the accession of King Haakon VII. and Queen Maud to the throne of Norway.

Many English guests were invited, and they included Sir Clements Markham, the Master of Elibank, M.P., Professor Westlake, Mr. Thomas Lough, M.P., and the Dean of Durham, the list being equally divided between the champions of Norway’s cause and the pillars of geographical research. Unfortunately, however, the new Minister, Dr. Nanse, was detained in Christiania by his duties, and in his stead the Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. J. Irgens, presided.

The prevalent atmosphere was Norwegian - speeches, cheers, sentiments, language, songs, loyalty, and enthusiasm. Queen Maud’s name and that of little Prince Olaf were received with special warmth, and it is clear, indeed, that the new King has very loyal subjects beyond the seas. It was a significant and successful gathering.
